“….whatever
you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for
me.” 1. BACKGROUND: Bankruptcies, lay-offs, downsizing and relocations are not just part of today’s economy, but part of life. You may know someone on your street or in your neighborhood that has been impacted by this and has lost his or her job. Talented people have been out of work, not for just a month or so, but for one year, two years, or longer. Some of these people are members of our parish here at St. Luke’s. Maybe you knew it and maybe you didn’t because the names of our unemployed are not announced from the pulpit like a death, or a sickness. Despite this, these people are here with us each week and they represent one of the faces of “the least of these brothers of mine” that we are called to minister to. Losing a job is demoralizing and embarrassing. Questions of “…How will we pay the mortgage and how will we feed the kids...” become routine concerns. These questions and others get bigger as the prospects of quick re-employment get smaller. These people hurt like those who have lost a spouse or a loved one. Losing a job often results in a loss of self-worth. 2. PROPOSAL: To create an informal, “in-house” job network database to be called The St. Luke’s Career Registry Profile. 3.
GOAL: To follow the directive given in Matthew 25:40. A notebook is available in the parish office during normal office hours for use by parish members looking for work (SEEKERS). The book will contain completed information sheets from those parish members (RESOURCE) who are willing to participate in the program and assist job seekers. The RESOURCE participant provides basic information about their work and their employer. They can select “levels of participation” based on their comfort level. The RESOURCE decides how much they want to help. The RESOURCE is under no obligation to recommend the person, unless they choose to do so. The SEEKER participant can contact the RESOURCE, depending on the type and level of help the RESOURCE will provide, and according to the requests for method of contact indicated. The program can also be used by our young adults as they seek career information. If a RESOURCE chooses to leave the program, they will remove their data sheet from the workbook. It is also requested that the RESOURCE keep the information provided up-to-date. The book will contain blank forms that can be used to update information as warranted. 5. LOGISTICS: Profile forms are available in the parish office and in the gathering space. Electronic copies of the forms can be obtained from Deb Oronzio or download below. Contact her at doronzio@nc.rr.com. Networking resources for SEEKERS are also available. To participate, simply complete the form and place in the collection box in the gathering space or return it to the parish office. Completed profiles will be assembled and kept in a three-ring binder that can be accessed by SEEKERS. All information provided will be kept strictly confidential and will be used expressly for the purpose of helping our fellow parishioners to network effectively and to find employment.
